Inserted Part Moved or Shifted? Check the Reference Chain.
An inserted part can appear to “move” when the source file changes, the Insert Part feature uses a different placement reference, a Move/Copy Body feature changes downstream, or external references rebuild in a different order. The key is to find which feature actually owns the position instead of dragging the body back into place.

Inserted geometry is not necessarily fixed forever at the location where you first saw it. The Insert Part feature, coordinate-system selection, locate-part option, or a later Move/Copy Body feature may be responsible for the final position.
2. Roll back through the feature tree
Move the rollback bar to just after the Insert Part feature, then advance one feature at a time. The first point where the body jumps is usually the feature you need to investigate.
3. Check the source part origin and coordinate system
If the inserted part is placed using origins or coordinate systems, changes to those references in the source can affect downstream placement. Verify that the source geometry is still built relative to the same intended reference structure.
4. Inspect Move/Copy Body features
A translation, rotation, or constraint inside a Move/Copy Body feature can make the imported body look like the Insert Part feature moved when the actual change happened later.
- Check translation and rotation values.
- Verify selected bodies are still the intended ones.
- Inspect any constraints or reference selections.
- Look for missing or replaced faces/edges used as references.
5. Look for external-reference changes
Inserted parts can carry external references. If a referenced face, plane, sketch, or configuration changed in the source, rebuilding the target can produce a different result even though no explicit move command was edited.
6. Check configurations
If the source part has multiple configurations, confirm the Insert Part feature is pulling the intended one. A configuration change can alter geometry, reference locations, or even which bodies exist.
7. Avoid fixing the symptom with another move
Adding a second Move/Copy Body feature to put the body back may temporarily hide the problem while making the model more fragile. It is usually better to repair the original placement reference or the first feature that changed unexpectedly.
- Save a copy of the target part.
- Roll back to the Insert Part feature.
- Confirm the body's position there.
- Advance through downstream features one at a time.
- Inspect the first feature where the shift appears.
- Check source configuration, origin, and coordinate-system references.
- Repair the root reference instead of stacking corrective moves.
If the part only moves after reopening
That points toward rebuild order, external references, or a reference that resolves differently when files are loaded fresh. Open the source part first, rebuild and save it, then reopen the target and compare the result.
