Design for Manufacturing Review Before You Send It to the Shop

A part can look correct in CAD and still be unnecessarily difficult or expensive to machine, fabricate, print, inspect, or assemble. A DFM review looks for those problems before they turn into quote surprises, rework, or rejected parts.

What a practical DFM review can catch

Machining Cost Drivers

Deep pockets, narrow tools, unnecessary setups, difficult workholding, inaccessible features, tight internal corners, excessive stock removal, and features that force a more expensive process.

Tolerance Problems

Tolerances that are tighter than the function requires, conflicting dimensions, unclear datum logic, stack-up risks, and dimensions that are difficult to inspect reliably.

Fabrication & Weldment Issues

Hard-to-reach welds, awkward joint geometry, unnecessary precision before welding, missing fabrication information, distortion-sensitive features, and parts that can be simplified.

3D Printing & Prototype Issues

Weak print orientation, unsupported geometry, unrealistic wall thickness, trapped supports, fit allowances, post-processing problems, and features better changed before printing.

Useful files to send

  • STEP, SolidWorks, STL, or other available CAD files
  • Dimensioned drawings or PDFs
  • Material and quantity
  • Target process: machining, fabrication, 3D printing, casting, or mixed process
  • Critical fits, surfaces, tolerances, and functional requirements
  • Any shop feedback or quote comments you have already received

DFM review for real manufacturing decisions

The goal is not to redesign a part just for the sake of changing it. The goal is to identify which details actually affect cost, manufacturability, inspection, reliability, or schedule, then separate worthwhile changes from things that can stay as designed.

DFM review FAQ

Do I need a finished drawing?

No. A review can start from a STEP or native CAD model. A drawing becomes important when tolerances, inspection requirements, notes, or fabrication details are part of the problem.

Can you review a design before I request machining quotes?

Yes. That is often the best time to review it because expensive features can still be changed before vendors price the work.

Can you redesign the part after the review?

If changes are needed, the redesign can be quoted separately with clearly defined deliverables.
