SolidWorks Drawing Extremely Slow? Start Here.

If a SolidWorks drawing takes forever to open, update, dimension, pan, zoom, or place views, the drawing file itself may not be the real problem. The slowdown is often caused by the model behind the drawing, view settings, imported geometry, or repeated rebuild work.

Quick diagnostic: If the model is already slow before you open the drawing, fix the model first. If the model runs normally but the drawing is slow, focus on drawing views, display quality, references, and view update behavior.

1. Check whether the model is the real bottleneck

A drawing has to load and process the referenced model. A very complicated part or assembly can make even a simple drawing feel painfully slow.

2. Look for expensive drawing views

Some drawing views require far more processing than others. Sections, detail views, broken-out sections, complex hidden-line views, and high-quality views can dramatically increase drawing update time.

Temporarily simplify or suppress one suspicious view at a time. If the drawing suddenly becomes responsive, you have isolated the expensive view instead of guessing at random settings.

3. Check display quality

High-quality drawing views can require SolidWorks to calculate more model edges and geometry. For complex models, that extra work can become noticeable.

Test a slow view using draft-quality display where appropriate. If performance improves dramatically, view quality is part of the slowdown.

4. Imported geometry can make drawings painful

STEP files and other imported models can contain a huge number of faces, edges, and small geometric details. A model may rotate acceptably in the part environment while still generating a very expensive drawing view.

Pay particular attention to imported equipment, vendor models, scanned geometry, fasteners, threads, logos, text, and highly detailed purchased components.

5. Watch for unnecessary model detail

A manufacturing drawing often does not need every tiny piece of geometry represented in every view.

If every drawing action seems to trigger a long pause, look for model features that are rebuilding unnecessarily or failing to resolve cleanly.

Open the referenced model by itself and force a rebuild. Watch for warnings, errors, or features that take unusually long to update.

7. Test the drawing systematically

Rather than changing ten settings at once, isolate the problem.

  1. Open the referenced model and check its performance.
  2. Save and rebuild the model.
  3. Open the drawing.
  4. Identify the slowest sheet or view.
  5. Temporarily simplify or suppress that view.
  6. Test the drawing again.
  7. Repeat until the feature or view causing the slowdown is identified.

When the drawing is still slow

If you have already tried the obvious fixes, the next step is to look at the actual model structure and drawing configuration. Performance problems can be very specific to the way a model was built.

Useful information includes your SolidWorks version, model type, number of bodies or components, drawing sheet count, screenshots of the feature tree, and which actions cause the longest delay.
